Australia to team up with US, Japan in regional infrastructure rival to China

A joint scheme between Australia, the US and Japan to help build infrastructure in Indo-Pacific nations as a strategic alternative to China's Belt and Road Initiative will struggle to match Beijing's financial muscle, experts warn.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced the trilateral partnership on Tuesday morning as part of the Trump administration announcing a raft of its own initiatives to step up regional engagement, which includes unlocking investment in the digital economy, energy and infrastructure sectors in the Indo-Pacific.
