All 39 Australian universities are rated against an international standard for research quality in the Australian Research Council’s triannual review of research quality – the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA).
World-standard research is rated 3; research above world standard at 4, and research well above world standard is a 5. ERA data informs Government strategic research investment decision-making process and insight for students and industry into research performance.
Dean Ian Burnett said the latest rankings, including three areas rated 5, are a marker of the efforts and achievements of research strength.
Quantum Physics is an area we have grown quickly and where - in just three years - Min-Hsui Hsieh, Peter Rohde, Marco Tomamichel, Michael Bremner and Chris Ferrie have achieved a scale and quality which is rated above world standard.
In Artificial intelligence and Image Processing, our experts - Dacheng Tao, Chengqi Zhang, Jie Lu, Gunquan Zhang, Ivor Tsang, Yi Yang, Gamini Dissanayake, Marco Tomamichel, and Farookh Hussain - continue to develop collaborations with community and industry organisations to develop technologies to tackle real world problems.
This Faculty is also the major contributor to the UTS rating for Biomedical Engineering, which is again a 5, reflecting the world leading work of Tuan Van Nguyen, Dominik Beck, CT Lin, Gyorgy Hutvagner and Hung Nguyen.
