Researchers explore impacts affecting excellence

Distinguished Professor Jie Lu, Associate Dean, Research Excellence, was host to over 50 researchers at the Faculty’s annual Research Excellence Retreat in December.
Research Centre Directors, Distinguished Professors, research leaders and researchers across the disciplines within Engineering and IT came together to explore Eight Correlations Impacting on Research Excellence.
These are:
- Research and teaching
- Fundamental and applied research
- Knowledge discovery and industry/society benefits
- Research productivity and research quality
- ECRs and established researchers
- Research collaboration between individual academics
- Research collaboration between academic and industry
- Research collaboration between research areas
Outcomes from the discussions have been recorded for the FEIT Research Excellence Framework, to be published in 2018. Prof Lu outlined the development of this Framework, which aims to use Faculty research quality and performance to provide guidance on definition, assessment and measurement to achieve research excellence, and acknowledged this year’s research excellence achievements.
“It is wonderful to see Distinguished Professor CT Lin and Dr Dominic Beck announced as the winners of the 2017 FEIT Research Excellence Awards,” she said.
“And just some of our other notable 2017 activities include an upward faculty research income trajectory, more 170 high impact journal papers, 25 ESI Highly Cited Papers published by talented researchers and an increased number of international awards!”
A three-minute pitch from nine Centres was a speedy showcase for sharing key highlights and programs from each.
Distinguished Professor Alexey Voinov, School of Information, Systems and Modelling and a Thomson Reuters Highly-Cited Researcher, delivered the keynote speech ‘Sustainability science and systems modelling in the Anthropocene’.
