Graduate Diploma in Midwifery

This course is offered over a 14-month, full-time period.

To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

Applicants must have one of the following:

• Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent, in Nursing AND Current registration as a nurse in Australia AND Current employment as a midwifery student in an approved maternity unit

OR

• Current registration as a nurse in Australia AND Current employment as a midwifery student in an approved maternity unit AND Relevant professional experience AND A general capacity to undertake tertiary education, demonstrated by successful completion of hospital or college certificates, professional or staff development

Applicants are selected on academic merit based on their grade point average.

Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application

• Curriculum Vitae AND Statement of Service in one of the following formats:
  • 'Statement of Service' provided by the employer
  • A completed 'UTS statement of service’ signed by the employer
  • A statutory declaration confirming work experience (for Australian Residents only)
  • An official letter from the applicant’s accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant’s work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations, and the nature of the business A business certificate of registration in original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation or ABN or similar documentation for Australian Businesses)

For applicants who need to demonstrate capacity to undertake tertiary education:

• Evidence of completion of a hospital or college certificate, professional development, or staff development.

For employment as a midwifery student in an approved maternity unit:

Applicants need to make application for employment as a midwifery student through the centralised recruitment process conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Office at NSW Ministry of Health, Midwifery Student Application for Recruitment and Training (MidStART), or through direct application to affiliated private hospitals. Private hospitals that offer midwifery student positions include the Mater Hospital (check their website for details or contact the hospital directly), Sydney Adventist Hospital (applications open in June; check the hospital website for details), St George Private Hospital, North Shore Private Hospital. Prospective students need to contact private hospitals directly in order to apply for a midwifery position.

UTS application details:

Applicants need to apply to UTS for a position in the Graduate Diploma in Midwifery program. The application must be direct via UTS Online Application. UTS accepts applications for enrolment in this course from June of the year prior to commencement. We recommend you submit your UTS application before October, as applications received after this date may not be considered. While a student can apply for the program at UTS during the relevant application period, acceptance into the course is dependent on the applicant securing employment as a student midwife (midwifery student). Successful applicants need to be available to attend the UTS campus from late January and are required to attend mandatory workshops in the first two (2) weeks of February.

The English proficiency requirement for local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 7.0 overall with a minimum score of 7.0 in each subset; or TOEFL: iBT: 94 overall, reading 24, listening 24, speaking 23, writing 27; or PTE: 65-72 overall with a minimum score of 65 in each subset; or OET: minimum score of B in each of the 4 components (listening, reading, writing and speaking).

Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as a Midwife. In addition, for registration eligibility, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requires applicants to provide evidence of identity and good character, and documented evidence for assessment of any variation to the standard education program, for example recognition of prior learning.
